Slovenia's master of early-modern, minimalist design, Jože Plečnik, graced Ljubljana with beautiful buildings and accoutrements; attractive cities are often described as 'jewel boxes', but here the name really fits. And bringing life to these historical riches, the city's 50,000-odd students support an active clubbing and cultural scene, and the museums, hotels and restaurants are among the best in the country.

Itinerary:

Day 1: Meeting at the Jože Pučnik Airport, transfer to Ljubljana, accommodation in a hotel, an evening walk through Ljubljana, proclaimed by European institutions as the »European Green Capital 2016«, dinner and overnight stay.

Day 2: After breakfast, we will visit the Prešeren`s Square, Tromostovje (the Tripple Bridge), Town Square with its baroque fountain, Town Hall and the Cathedral of St. Nicholas. We will climb the Ljubljana Castle hill with its panoramic view of the city. Afternoon free for shopping. Overnight stay.

Day 3: After breakfast, transfer to another part of Slovenia – Gorenjska, to the medieval town of Škofja Loka, known since 973, and from there to the most renowned tourist place in Slovenia – Lake Bled. We walk through the Vintgar gorge (if the weather allows it), that was created by the wonderful green Radovna river with all its pools and cataracts. The Bled Castle, first mentioned in the year of 1011, is one of the oldest Slovenian castles. From the castle, situated on a steep cliff rising from the lake, there is a beautiful view of the surrounding mountains and valleys. After descending the castle we cross Lake Bled to get to the Bled Island with a characteristic boat called “pletna” (optional). The small church on it has its origins in the Middle Ages, but was restored during the baroque period and has a self-standing tower with the “bell of wishes”. The beautiful mountain road leads to Bohinj with its lake, the largest in Slovenia. If the weather allows it, we take the cable car to Vogel and see the mountains from another point. Return to Ljubljana, overnight stay.

Day 4: On our way to Primorska, we will stop in Planica with a completely new nordic center with 8 ski jumping hills and a large flying one, where the finals of World Cup in ski jumping are held every year. The itinerary continues over the road pass of Vršič, the highest pass in Slovenia, joining two Slovenian regions – Gorenjska and Primorska, to the valley of Trenta. The road over the pass was built during the World War I by over 1000 Russian prisoners. To honor those who died there, the Russian chapel was raised. The road descends to the valley of the Soča river, where we stop for fresh trout or sheep and goat cheese at one of the tourist farms. Because of its colour, the Soča river is called “the emerald beauty”. Passing by Kobarid and Most na Soči we continue our way to Goriška Brda, to the old village of Šmartno with its old walls and abundance of stories about the wars between Venice and Habsburg dynasty in the 16th and 17th centuries. Because of its architectural heritage, it was proclaimed as the monument of the highest importance. Some buildings date from the beginning of the last millennium, and two towers are Roman. Because of the beautiful nature Brda are called “Slovenian Tuscany”. We will stay overnight in the modern capital of Slovenian tourism – Portorož.

Day 5: Today’s destination is Trieste, freed from Venice domination in 1719, when the golden days of its history began. Its role as an important Habsburg city and harbour was accentuated with construction of the railway ViennaTrieste. We will see the city center and the beautiful castle Miramar, built by archduke Ferdinand Maximillian I for himself and his wife Charlotte of Belgium. We will visit Palmanova Outlet Village. The Slovenian coastal road leads to ancient and beautiful Piran, also called »small Venice«. One of the world’s landmarks, situated in the Piran region, are the saltworks, where even today salt is acquired from the sea in the traditional, natural way, with the help of sun and wind. We will walk through the old city of Piran, Tartini’s square, we will visit the church of St. George and finish
our day in Portorož. Overnight stay.

Day 6: Trip to the outlet village Noventa di Piave near Venice, Venice city tour.

Day 7: After breakfast, we will visit the largest Karst cave – Postojna cave. With its 20 km long cave system, it is the most visited cave in Europe and one of the largest Karst landmarks of the world. The guided visit of the cave is conducted partly by an underground train and partly on foot. In the large Concert Hall, there is the home of the olm, the most famous cave animal, and the biggest trogloditic amphibian in the world, which used to be believed to be dragon offspring. We will also see the Predjama Castle, partly built in a cave in the middle of a 123 m high cliff. The original castle was famous because of its owner, the rebel knight Erazem. Today’s castle is from the Renaissance period and incorporates a museum. Our trip comes to an end in Ljubljana, where the remaining afternoon is free for exploring Ljubljana on your own.
